CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - Could HAWKS be lucky on their third attempt in the final?

In the first three tournaments this year Georgina had won two silver medals and had been in a four team tie for second place but were eliminated based on a plus minus ratio.    This was their 3rd appearance at the dance and were looking for GOLD.

It was going to be a tough game against a spirited Oakville team that have proven to have no quit.

The girls played hard and gave what they had left in the tank.    Both teams exchanged a few shots with little in the way of scoring chances.    Oakville got a number of shots from the outside and Georgina had several goal crease scrambles that would just not go in.   Both goalies were perfect through 29 minutes turning away all opportunities.

Georgina found themselves on a late 3rd period power play.  They pinned Oakville but were unable to capitalize on their chances.  It looked liked the teams were heading to overtime.   With only 2:38 remaining the Hornets defender had picked up a neutral zone puck at speed went in all alone and made the perfect shot to take a 1-0 lead.

A continued Georgina power play for 45 seconds, and a pulled goalie did not see any results.   Oakville goal scorer had again stolen the puck and broke in unchallenged to hit the post with the open net.

With only 1.7 second remaining Georgina had one chance and overload the zone on the offensive face-off.   To Oakville's credit the centre collapsed on the puck and for the 3rd straight game Georgina watched 3 teams celebrate with excitement after beating them with last minute efforts.

It felt like we had lost 3 Championship games. It is disappointing to give up all our goals in the last 5 minutes of the game against the gold medal winners in all three games this year.   There is no shame in the results, Oakville is a good team.

The girls played well.   We often size up other teams to determine who we have to raise our game against to remain competitive.  What we are now realizing is that other teams are looking at us as the "Team to Beat".   Others will not quit and celebrate hard when successful against our girls.
