Midget B - PROVINCIALS and LLFHL CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND!
The Midget B Hawks have had somewhat of a storybook season which has consisted of them competing in the finals in 3 of their 4 tournaments, obtaining a bye into Provincials, finishing tops of the Central Division with only 1 loss, scoring the most goals (71) and having the least goals against (8) of all LLFHL teams in their category and have now qualified for the LLFHL Championships.  With the CHAMPIONSHIP tournament and the PROVINCIALS just around the corner things are about to get tougher.

The matchup for the final series of the LLFHL Central Division Playoffs between Toronto Leaside Wildcats and the Georgina Golden Hawks was heavily anticipated.  During the regular season both teams had only lost 1 game each.   Georgina's loss came at the hands of Leaside. The teams tied their second meeting 0-0. This was going to be a hard fought series.

The Wildcats declined to start the series early and once Georgina were aware of Toronto's self imposed/extreme limitations and OWHA rule violations for scheduling the battle STARTED between the clubs managers, moved to the coaches, advanced to the Associations and then sent LLFHL and OWHA for a resolution.    The rules were stated but not enforced by the governing bodies who declined to intervene.

With home ice advantage Georgina set their two dates and Toronto were given a 12 day window in between to pick one date.  At game #1 Leaside finally produced a date for game #2.

Game #1: was set for Georgina on March 10th.    Toronto made the trip down a few players.    The WILDCATS pounced on Georgina with tremendous speed to start the game.    GEORGINA were caught off guard and stuck in practice mode after a short break due to finishing their previous series quickly.   The game remained scoreless until 7:50 of 3rd period when the HAWKS Brittany slid home a power play marker on a goal crease scramble for the lead.  Three minutes later Erin split the defense at her own blue line, went in a fired one post and in for the lead extension to 2.    WILDCATS didn’t give up and came within 1 when the puck rolled up and over Lauren with only 1:52 remaining.   WILDCATS pulled their keeper on an offensive faceoff opportunity.    Georgina got the puck fired it at the open cage… ICING.   Face off again!.  Leaside won the draw, Brit intercepted the pass to the D fired again at the open cage… Yes… 3-1 Georgina.  Georgina outshot Leaside 24 to 15 and had 12 in close scoring chances. Georgina Leading the “first to 4 point series” with 2pt

Game #2: was in Toronto at the Habitant Arena March 12th.   “Where?”  That’s what LLFHL said when they had to add the arena to their data base.    It was a small little arena and a small ice surface.   Toronto LEASIDE had been hosting a large Tournament that weekend and a morning ice slot at the Habitant was all that was available.   Toronto wanted to play Georgina before their Tournament games.    Toronto still with a couple of girls away (March Break) and Georgina missing one the two squads were set to lock horns.    Toronto managed only 7 shots on net and were exhausted by the third period when double shifting their key players.   Despite Georgina controlling the play theycould not hit the net and registered only 10 shots of their own. Toronto asked for and were granted an additional 2 minutes between 2nd and 3rd period to rest players. The game remained scoreless and Lauren captured shutout 23 of season.   This was like a win for Leaside who just stole a point and kept their hopes alive.   Georgina looked at it like a missed opportunity to eliminate exhausted Wildcats.   Georgina now lead the series 3pts to 1pt going into game 3 at home.    Georgina would need a tie or win to advance.  Leaside would need a win to force overtime.   Game three will decide the teams fate.  Both would be at full strength for the final game in Georgina March 22nd.

Game #3: at the Ice Palace March 22nd.   Toronto needed a win to stay alive.    Georgina needed a tie to advance but were also looking to make a statement and capture a win.    Unfortunately the statement we made was “we are not ready to play tonight” Wildcats came out flying out shooting Georgina 11-1 in the first period.   Lauren was stellar.   The goal by Leaside came with 25 seconds remaining in the first and was a weak marker that capitalized on Georgina errors.   Georgina were able to calm emotions between periods.     Over the next two periods Georgina outshot Leaside 26-9 and Erin captured the equalizer on the power play at 6:50 of the 3rd period.    Both teams killed off penalties, Leaside at 5:14 and Georgina at 4:34.   At 1:20 remaining Toronto began pushing to pull their goalie and obtained an offensive zone tripping penalty, their bench became unglued obtaining a bench minor.   Now two players down and the net empty they were looking for a miracle.   They did get a little lucky at 55 seconds remaining when the refs handed out a courtesy minor to Georgina and then Leaside gave it back with a two many man penalty their own.  Despite only having 4 players on the ice (when they should of had 5) Georgina controlled the play in the last minute with Toronto’s net empty.   HAWKS burned the clock and with the 1-1 tie captured the series and advanced to the LLFHL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Congratulations Midget B on your exceptional season, keep it going girls and you can write your own ending!
